Providing patient care rarely means simply suturing a cut, giving medications or a shot. Patient care goes far beyond routine medical care. It means helping to reduce the patient's fears and worries. It means finding ways to help the patient cope effectively with their injury or illness. It means remembering the family of the patient has their own set of fears and reminding them to use their support systems and practice good self care. As one nurse says, "a good compassionate nurse can not only apply Band-Aids but also apply hope, passion, and wisdom to struggling patients and families". Providing patient care means taking care of the patient as a whole. Their physical and emotional health, as well as the emotional health of their family members.
