If you ask most people in healthcare they can tell you the moment they decided to become a Nurse, Doctor, Psychologist, Social worker etc. It may have been a personal experience with a loved one, a hospitalization as a child or something larger like a national disaster or tragedy.
For one nurse, her personal experience with an illness that attacked her kidneys, leading to two kidney transplants, influenced her future career path. She turned a traumatic medical event, that could have shaped her view on medical care in a negative way, into a positive pathway in life. Her experience as a patient led her to want to be a nurse and to pursue her dreams of helping others, just as her nurses’ cared for her.
