March is Social Work Month and a perfect time to reflect upon the work social workers do with traumatized patients. Across the nation, social workers fill various roles in health care settings, performing duties ranging from psychosocial assessment of patients to crisis intervention to discharge planning. If your medical setting employs social workers, be sure to explore the services they offer. Social workers can be particularly helpful in working with the medical team to address medical trauma in pediatric patients. They can assess patient and family adjustment to illness or injury; help with strategies for coping with traumatic stress resulting from painful, invasive, or prolonged treatments; and connect patients and families to additional services. Take a moment during Social Work Month to get to know the social workers at your hospital or clinic. You’ll be glad you did---and so will your patients.
